A detached additional dwelling unit is a separate living space. It is located in the same area as the main residence. Contrary to attached ARUs that share a wall with the main house, detached ARUs are freestanding structures. They have their own entrances, kitchens, bathrooms, and sleeping areas, with more privacy and independence than a room within the main house. These units can be used for family members, rentals, or as a separate home office.
The suite must not be taller than 4.0 metres in height and the greater of 42 sq metre. It must be approximately 5% of the house in size. Plus, 0.6 metre setback is required along the side and rear property lines.
