In 2023, Burlington introduced updates to its zoning by-law, allowing detached accessory dwelling units on residential properties citywide, promoting affordable housing and flexible living solutions.
Burlington’s accessory units are a secondary residential unit on the same property as a primary home. It could be a basement apartment or detached Garden Suites. They provide additional living space while complying with zoning regulations for safety, size, and design.
The suite must not be taller than 4.0 meters in height and the greater of 42 sq meter. It must be approximately 5% of the house in size. Plus, 0.6 meter setback is required along the side and rear property lines.
